Bourdieu, Critic of FoucaultThe Case of Empirical Social Science against Double-Game-PhilosophyUniversity of Copenhagen An attempt is made to confront Foucault and Bourdieu. First of all by answering the question: Why did Foucault never discuss Bourdieu, while Bourdieu increasingly discusses Foucault, more and more in the sense of a sharp rejection of some of Foucaults main positions? In a second move, the similarities and differences between their positions in the field and their intellectual life histories are outlined. In a third part, Bourdieu's critique of Foucault is presented extensively, up to some pages of Ein soziologischer Selbstversuch.
Key Words: Bourdieu's sociology of education critique of social constructionism epistemology of social sciences Foucault's history of science
